Crypto tipping made simple.

Jargon-free answers for first-time tippers. Start here if crypto feels new — you'll be up and running in under 5 minutes.

What is SOL?

SOL is the native currency of the Solana blockchain — a fast, low-cost payment network. When you tip a creator in SOL, the payment settles in under a second and costs roughly $0.001 or less in network fees.

You can also tip in USDC, a "stablecoin" that's pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. USDC is ideal if you want a predictable dollar value regardless of SOL's price.

  • Sent peer-to-peer — no bank or payment processor in the middle.
  • Settles in under 1 second on the Solana network.
  • USDC tips stay at a stable dollar value.
  • Both tokens are held in the same Solana wallet.

Get a wallet

A Solana wallet is a free browser extension (or mobile app) that stores your SOL and USDC and lets you approve transactions. You install it once and it's always there, just like a password manager.

We recommend Phantom — it's the most popular Solana wallet, works in Chrome/Firefox/Edge, and has great mobile apps.

How to install Phantom (2 minutes)

  1. 1Go to phantom.app in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  2. 2Click "Download" and add the browser extension.
  3. 3Open Phantom and click "Create a new wallet".
  4. 4Write your 12-word recovery phrase on paper and keep it safe.
  5. 5Set a password for the extension.
  6. 6Done — your wallet is ready.
Important: Your recovery phrase (12 words) is the only backup for your wallet. Write it on paper, store it somewhere safe offline, and never share it with anyone — not even SolTip.

Add funds

Before you can send a tip, you'll need a small amount of SOL (or USDC) in your wallet. Here are the easiest ways to get some:

Buy directly inside Phantom

Easiest

Open Phantom → click the Buy button → choose your amount → pay with a card or bank transfer. This is the fastest method for first-timers. Phantom uses MoonPay or Coinbase Pay as the payment processor.

Buy on Coinbase, then transfer

Create a Coinbase account → buy SOL → go to "Send" → paste your Phantom wallet address → confirm. Takes 10–20 minutes for first verification.

Receive from a friend

If someone you know has SOL, they can send it directly to your wallet address. Open Phantom, tap 'Receive', and share your address or QR code.

How much do I need? Just the tip amount plus a tiny network fee (~$0.001). If you're tipping 0.1 SOL, have at least 0.105 SOL in your wallet to be safe.

Send a tip

Once you have a wallet with funds, tipping takes about 10 seconds.

Desktop (browser wallet)

  1. 1Open the creator's SolTip link (e.g. soltip.app/u/username).
  2. 2Choose your tip amount and currency (SOL or USDC).
  3. 3Optionally add your name and a message.
  4. 4Click "Send X SOL" — the page will ask you to connect your wallet.
  5. 5Click your wallet (e.g. Phantom) in the wallet picker.
  6. 6A Phantom pop-up will appear showing the transaction details.
  7. 7Review the amount and click Confirm.
  8. 8Done! You'll see a success screen in a few seconds.

Mobile (QR code)

  1. 1On the tip page, tap the "Mobile / QR" tab.
  2. 2Open Phantom or Solflare on your phone.
  3. 3Tap the Scan icon inside the wallet app.
  4. 4Point your camera at the QR code on screen.
  5. 5The tip amount will be pre-filled — tap Confirm.

Stay safe

Never share your recovery phrase.

Anyone who has your 12-word phrase controls your wallet entirely. SolTip will never ask for it.

Check you're on the real SolTip site.

Our domain is soltip.app. Bookmark it. Be wary of links in DMs or emails.

Verify the wallet address.

If you're sending a large amount, cross-check the first and last 4 characters of the recipient address on the tip page and in your wallet pop-up.

SolTip is non-custodial.

Your tip moves directly from your wallet to the creator's wallet on-chain. SolTip never holds your funds — if we disappeared tomorrow, your wallet would be unaffected.

Fees

SolTip charges a 1% platform fee on every successful tip. This is shown clearly in the breakdown before you confirm — you always know exactly what the creator will receive.

The Solana network also charges a small transaction fee (paid by you, the tipper) of roughly $0.001 or less. This is separate from SolTip's fee and goes to Solana validators.

There are no fees on cancelled, failed, or expired tip requests.

Troubleshoot

My wallet pop-up didn't appear.

Make sure your Phantom extension is unlocked (click the puzzle icon in your browser toolbar and open Phantom). If you previously rejected a connection, go to Phantom → Settings → Trusted Apps and remove soltip.app, then try again.

It says 'insufficient funds'.

Your wallet doesn't have enough SOL or USDC. You need the tip amount plus a small network fee. Add more funds via Phantom's Buy button, then retry.

The transaction failed.

Solana can occasionally reject transactions during high network load. Click 'Try again' — it usually works on the second attempt. If it keeps failing, try a smaller amount or switch to USDC.

I don't have a desktop wallet — can I still tip?

Yes. On the payment page, switch to the 'Mobile / QR' tab and scan the QR code with Phantom or Solflare on your phone. Or tap 'Open in wallet' on a mobile device.

How do I know the tip was received?

After the transaction confirms (usually 2–5 seconds), you'll see a success screen with a link to view the transaction on Solscan — the Solana block explorer. This proves the funds moved on-chain.
